Jerusalem was a type and shadow, or a picture, of the future location and pattern of the crucifixion of Christ! Abraham was God’s covenant man, and if Abraham was willing to give up his son of the covenant, then one day God would be willing to give up His only begotten Son as a sacrifice for mankind’s sin. When God was demanding Abraham to offer Isaac, we read, “God did tempt Abraham . . . ” (Gen. 22:1, KJV ). In English, when we read the word tempt , we think of “temptation.” However, this word tempt is actually a Hebrew word for a test , such as to assay a metal by placing it under the fire. God tested Abraham’s willingness and his faith in God’s Word. The writer to the Hebrews revealed the level of Abraham’s trust in God when he wrote that if Abraham had actually slain his son, this father believed God could even raise his son from the dead (Heb. 11:17–19). God will never test you to give up anything He is unable to raise back up! We can certainly mark our spiritual, physical, or mental battles as a test . The word test is not found in the King James Version of the New Testament; however, there are two Greek words used in the Greek New Testament that carry the meaning of “to test.” They are the words dokimazo and the word peirazo . The first word, dokimazo, is used in an ancient Greek manuscript relating to a physician who had passed an examination to receive a degree of doctor of medicine; thus this Greek word refers to one who “passes the examination.” Today in public schools and colleges we speak of giving the students a test , or in college an exam .
