Chapter 17 THE SEASON OF YOUR ULTIMATE TEST

T HE NARRATIVE IS PERHAPS THE MOST UNUSUAL, AND TO the secular mind, the most ridiculous and inhumane story in the entire Bible. In the ancient story an older couple has believed for a son for many years. Now the man is ninety-nine, and the man’s wife is ninety; she is barren and has already gone through menopause. By a miracle she conceives and gives birth to a son, and thus they held the promise from God in their arms. The boy grows up, and the father is told by the Lord to take this miracle child to a high mountain, build an altar, and offer him up to God as a sacrifice. (See Genesis 22.) The critic questions, “What kind of God would demand a human sacrifice?” In answer, no one was actually sacrificed, as Isaac got up off the altar.
