prophets were to be obeyed until the time of John, and Christ was now on the scene to announce that the kingdom of heaven was at hand (Matt. 4:17). If Christ was not the awaited Messiah and another was coming in the future, it would indicate that John could enjoy more ministry time to people in the future and would not die in prison. Christ did not release His cousin, and shortly after this, John was beheaded by Herod (Matt. 14:10). Christ knew John’s future, but John was uncertain of his future . Christ wanted John to avoid offense when things did not go the way John hoped. OFFENDED AT GOD Throughout my ministry I have encountered men and women who were very angry at God for not answering a prayer in the manner they prayed or expected. I have actually observed some believers who lived their lives in a careless fashion, sowing their wilds oats, only to produce an unexpected wild harvest of trouble, for which these people then blamed God for not causing a drought and preventing the bad seed they planted early from sprouting later in their garden of life. One woman was having difficulty in her marriage and met a man on a trip. She began calling him on the phone and eventually had consensual sexone night. It was intended to be a one-night stand with no harm done to anyone. However, she became pregnant, and the man threatened to sue her for the custody of the child. The woman was overwhelmed and angry that the Lord did not somehow
