his disciples visited him. John sent them back to ask Christ a very interesting and rather odd question. John said to ask: “Are You the Coming One [the Messiah], or do we look for another?” (Matt. 11:3). Was John confused about Christ? He previously introduced Christ as the Lamb of God, and he knew he was to prepare the way (Matt. 3:3) and then to step out of the way. John was the first to announce that Christ would baptize believers with the Holy Ghost and fire (v. 11, KJV ). When John’s disciples asked if Christ was the One (the expected Messiah), Christ’s answered John with these words: Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me. —MATTHEW 11:4–6 Christ revealed that the miracles being performed were the sign Christ was the Messiah. But why did Christ conclude His answer by telling John he is blessed if he is not offended in Christ? This is perplexing until one understands the possible coded message John was sending Christ. If Christ was the Messiah, then He had both supernatural power and political influence to get John released from this prison cell. Christ’s answer indicated that He had no intention of releasing John and that He wanted John not to open the door of his heart to an offense. Christ was not going to do what John wanted done —initiate a prison break. Christ knew that the Law and
