Do you see how deceptive this is? You can go round and round with a New Ager if you don't pin them down to their exact definition of which Jesus and which God they are talk ing about. They believe that we human beings ARE DIVINE, just as the Hindus believe every human is a part of Brahman. The quote "I said ye are gods" comes out of Psalm 82. The New Agers use this as a proof text that we human beings are divine and equal with God our Creator. This particular quote gives a lot of Christians trouble when trying to talk with New Agers about their need for a Savior. Let's look at that scripture in context:

"God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods. How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah. Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afnict ed and needy ... I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes." Psalm 82:1-7

There are two significant facts here which the New Agers choose to overlook. First, the one true God, the Creator, clearly is so much more powerful than the beings He refers to as "gods," that He places judgment upon them and con demns them to die like men. That alone shows a clear dis tinction between the beings referred to as "gods" and human beings. Secondly, the Hebrew word for "gods" used in that text is defined as "magistrates" or, in other words, administrators or rulers, also sometimes used for angels. (Strong's Exhaus tive Concordance, word 430 in Hebrew.) There is a vast dif ference between the infinite God, Creator of all, and the beings referred to as "gods."
