(T.M. and Zen have become very popular in the U.S. This same technique is used in the New Age classes of self-improvement and mind control and in Buddhism.) A mantra is the rapid repetition of a series of words or sounds. It has two purposes. The first is to produce a mysti cal state which is actually a trance in which the mind is blanked out. This in turn places the person into direct con tact with the spirit world. Secondly, the mantra is supposed to actually "embody" a spiritual being. As the words are spoken, the being comes into existence and enters the person using the mantra. Mantras are a direct doorway opening up the person to the entrance of demons.

"Mantras are Sanskrit syllables, words or phrases which, when repeated in meditation, will bring the in dividual to a higher state of consciousness. [i.e. into contact with the spirit world.] ... it has a certain metre and a presiding deity [demon] ... " (Ibid., p. 98)
