to great lengths to avoid you. One reason successful people are successful is because they obey rules and protocol for business success, and they have a professional work ethic. They can be trusted with information. There is a time to speak and a time to be silent (Eccl. 3:7) and sometimes it is best to be silent. A harsh word will stir up anger and the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness (Proverbs 15:1 and 2). You will never need to apologize for terrible things you did not say. Your words can always come back to haunt you in the future, so guard your tongue. If you are a person who cannot control your words and attitude, allow the Holy Spirit and the Word of God to renew both your mind and your mouth. 5. Chronic Complaining You never want to ask some people how they are doing. Thirty minutes later, you will know what their doctor said, what their lawyer said, how many joint pains they have, and an updated report on their rebellious child. Some people are chronic complainers. These people tend to attract other chronic complainers, and everybody else avoids the complainer because they tire of hearing them complain constantly. Often chronic complainers have a desire for personal compassion and attention, and they use their problems to draw an emotional response from the listener. Pay attention to yourself. How are you coming across to others? Constant complaining will destroy your chances for success in life and cause you to lose friends. Allow the Holy Spirit and the Word of God to renew your mind, as well as your mouth. Speak the positive words of Scripture and your life will change. Speak a good report. 6. Selfish Behavior A selfish attitude says, “What’s in it for me?” A selfish person is not a giver. They hoard everything for themselves and gather goods for their own plans and purposes. If you want to have success in life, instead of always taking in, you must also pour out. To take and not release demonstrates a selfish nature in which we consider ourselves more important than others. A selfish person will never learn the joy of giving and being a blessing to others. We are blessed to be a blessing, so learn to give. Develop an attitude of
