God touched him. He repeats the same concept about deep sleep in Daniel 10:9. After he entered this deep sleep stage, he heard the words of a messenger of the Lord. Just what is a “deep sleep”? The Hebrew phrase can allude to being “sluggish” or entering some form of a “spiritual trance.” In my own life, there have been several times when I experienced a true spiritual vision. Usually I was extremely exhausted when this occurred. I believe that this tiredness sometimes causes the fleshly or carnal man—who is always busy and going nonstop—to be more suppressed, thereby enabling the inner spirit of a person to become more alert or aware. NOW I LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP Sleep is a very important part of living a long life. When a person is under stress or mental anguish, it is difficult to rest. A continual lack of sleep is called insomnia . A person who sleeps but continually tosses and has difficulty breathing may have sleep apnea . Excessive sleep, to the point that a person wants to sleep and not get up, can be symptomatic of narcolepsy . All three of these forms of sleep disorders are very unhealthy and should be treated. These disorders not only interrupt normal sleep patterns but can also cause irregular and bizarre dreaming patterns to occur. During normal sleep, there are five stages of sleep that a person will enter. The first is the drowsy stage, which, with most people, will last a period of about ten minutes.
