themselves as Christians. Today a person can attend a Sunday morning service, go to the altar and pray a “sinner’s prayer,” walk out the door, and not return to church the remaining forty years of his or her life. However, if that person dies and the funeral is at the “home church,” most of the time that person is preached into the eternal kingdom because they were a “Christian.” In some Islamic nations, such as Egypt, if a person is not a Muslim by profession or was not born into an Islamic family, it is assumed that person is automatically a Christian, even though he or she may have never publicly confessed Christ or received water baptism and the sacraments. There are countless men and women who attend church on Sunday morning whose attendance identifies them as Christians to the casual observer. However, they never witness to a sinner, never attend church more than two hours a week, never give their tithes and offerings, and live weekly lives similar to the average sinner in town who has no understanding of the Scripture and is as lost as a shipwrecked man on an uncharted island. Here is the issue. To identify a true born-again, redeemed believer who has been forgiven of his or her sins and cleansed through the redemptive blood of Christ (1 Pet. 1:18–19), there will be spiritual fruit on the vine of that person’s life (John 15:8). Once a true follower of Christ becomes an active Christian after receiving initial redemption, then “old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Cor. 5:17).
