Classical Pentecostals denied with no uncertain terms that any true Christian could ever be possessed by a demon. The charismatic community, however, would often have deliverance services in which they would invite Christians to have demons cast out of them. This question, Can a Christian be possessed by a demon?, has been one of the most controversial and at times divisive questions to answer. Let me begin by saying I have close friends who are theologically on opposite ends of the spectrum, and both love Christ deeply. However, I will do my utmost to be true to the Scriptures in this discourse on the subject. W HAT I S A T RUE C HRISTIAN ? The first question we must ask does not address the issue of oppression and possession or a discourse on the body, soul, and spirit of a person. It defines a true Christian . The word Christian should be used to identify a true disciple of Christ (Acts 11:26)—one who has received a redemptive covenant and follows and obeys the instructions found in the New Testament. The word Christian is used twice—Acts 26:28 and 1 Peter 4:16—and it basically means, “a follower of Christ.” However, the dedication and commitment levels of the early Christians in the New Testament era seem to be far different from people in today’s Western culture who identify
