act of redemption is to deliver us from Satan’s power, as it is written: He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. —C OLOSSIANS 1:13–14 This is where an important point must be made concerning Satan’s ability to possess and control a believer. If a person is identified as a Christian simply because he or she prayed one prayer, attends church occasionally, or was raised in a Christian family, then this name by association does not prevent a Christian in name only from coming under control of various evil spirits. To be a Christian in name only is not living a life totally for Christ and free from sin. Such a person has no authority over the enemy. In much the same way, although demons “believe [that there is one God]—and tremble!” (James 2:19), this does not mean these believing demons have been converted and can enter a redemptive covenant. They know God exists, because Satan and the fallen angels under his control once worshipped God and have seen God. But their belief is not saving faith on their part. “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen ” (Heb. 11:1, emphasis added). Demonic spirits even identified Christ as the Son of God (Matt. 8:29; Mark 3:11), which is a requirement for a person to become a Christian (1 John 5:10–
