If a person is identified as a Christian simply because he or she prayed one prayer, attends church occasionally, or was raised in a Christian family, then this name by association does not prevent a Christian in name only from coming under control of various evil spirits. To be a Christian in name only is not living a life totally for Christ and free from sin. Such a person has no authority over the enemy. In much the same way, although demons “believe [that there is one God]—and tremble!” (James 2:19), this does not mean these believing demons have been converted and can enter a redemptive covenant. They know God exists, because Satan and the fallen angels under his control once worshipped God and have seen God.
