condemnation, and shame. For an addict, it is easier to escape the pain, the negative memories, and the reality of life by dulling the feelings and the senses. However, addictions will also leave the victim vulnerable to the swords and fiery darts of the adversary, as they are left without any defense against the battle assaults of an enemy who never plays by the rules. W OUNDED C HILDREN I cannot count the times in an altar service when a mother is standing behind a youngster, ages eight to thirteen, asking for prayer for a rebellious spirit that has come over the youth. At times I sensed the Holy Spirit requiring me to ask the mother, “So when did you divorce this child’s father?” Often the parent looks amazed and says, “How did you know?” I replied, “I can see the pain in your youngster’s eyes and face. He (or she) is not rebelling out of a desire for rebellion but out of emotional pain. The divorce placed an invisible but real wound in his heart, and he resents the person you married and is expressing it by resisting authority. You think rebellion is the root, but it is not; it is the fruit of rejection.” It is those early wounds that, if unrepaired and left in secret, will become the back door for the dark spirit of deception to enter in later life, further frustrating the person and piling on more emotional baggage in a heart already packed with despair.
