“covers,” a word meaning, “to fence in and protect.” Putting the two words together, it describes an important angel that protected by using its outstretched wings. This particular angel appears to be a guardian of the light of God’s presence and glory. A further study of this anointed cherub in Ezekiel 28:13–16 gives more insight into his activities in ages past. He was in Eden, the garden of God (v. 13). This could allude to the heavenly paradise or the earthly Eden. Either way, no earthly king of Tyre or anyone else was in the heavenly Eden, the garden of God, except this anointed cherub before his fall, or in the earthly Eden except the serpent and Adam and Eve (Gen. 3:1–2). Ezekiel said that “every precious stone was [his] covering” and lists nine semiprecious and precious gem stones that formed some type of breastplate or covering on the front of this angelic creature (Ezek. 28:13). These nine stones are the same stones fashioned among the twelve stones on the breastplate of the high priest in the Old Testament (Exod. 28). We also read that he was formed with “tabrets” ( KJV ) and pipes. The word tabrets indicates timbrels for a tambourine: small objects that create a rhythmic sound used in this round percussion instrument. The pipes are not pipes such as a flute, but the Hebrew means a bezel or a gemstone . His outward design was prepared by God at his creation. He was “set” upon the holy mountain (Ezek. 28:14, KJV ). The “holy mountain” is found in two locations—the mountain of God in heaven, called Mount Zion (Heb. 12:22), and later the earthly Jerusalem (Dan.
