of the morning” was among the first “heavenly lights.” There is also other prophetic insight found in Ezekiel 28. In chapters 26 and 27 the prophet gives a word to the king of Tyre, an earthly leader. Ezekiel continues his discourse in chapter 28 but then begins describing a creature that cannot be a human man. Ezekiel speaks of the “anointed cherub”: You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God. —E ZEKIEL 28:14 Twice Ezekiel mentions this cherub (vv. 14, 16). A cherub is a created angel with many faces and was (is) assigned as a guardian of the presence and glory of God. After Adam’s removal from the garden cherubim with flaming swords guarded the east entrance of Eden to prevent Adam from reentering the garden and eating from the tree of life in his sinful condition (Gen. 3:24). Two cherubim made from beaten gold were placed on the mercy seat (the golden lid) of the ark of the covenant, symbolically guarding the seat God descended upon yearly on the Day of Atonement (Exod. 25:19, 22; 37:8). Ezekiel revealed that this angel was the “anointed” cherub (Ezek. 28:14). This Hebrew word anointed is not the normal word for anointed or anointing, as in “anointing with oil” (James 5:14) or the anointing with the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:38).
