Neither did he make you run out of gas—you forgot to fill up. He didn’t make the tree fall in your driveway; the storm did. The devil didn’t make you sick, but three plates of pork ribs sure did! Satan gets blamed for many simple daily hindrances. However, extreme opposition to the gospel and persecution can be a result of satanic interference. J UST W HO I S S ATAN ? To understand who Satan really is, we must look among the words of the Old Testament prophets. Many scholars believe Isaiah 14 is a reference detailing the events surrounding Satan’s original fall and expulsion from heaven. Isaiah 14:12 begins by saying: How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! The word translated Lucifer is only found here in the entire Bible and is controversial among Hebrew scholars. The Hebrew word is heylel and actually refers to “brightness.” Thus the word Lucifer has been understood to be a personal name, but in reality it is a word meaning, “a bright son of the morning or a bright morning star.” This person of brightness called a “son
