guilt ridden and knew he had been unfaithful to his promise of never denying Christ. At the resurrection, when Mary saw Christ alive, the angel of the Lord that had removed the grave stone enabling the women to look inside gave instructions for Mary to: “Go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him” (Mark 16:7). Why was it important to specifically invite Peter to meet with the risen Messiah? When we read the narrative of events following, Peter was back in Galilee fishing when Christ showed up on the shore telling them to come and dine. While the text is unclear, it appears that Peter may have gone back to his family fishing business after making a fool of himself by saying he would never deny Christ and then denying Him. I have seen this fleeing occur when a good church member has a moral failure. That person often quits coming to church—not because he or she is living in the sin, but because that person is simply too humiliated and embarrassed by the failure to return to church. After dining with the disciples, Christ asked Peter three times, “Do you love me more than these?” All three times Peter replied, “You know I love You.” Each time Christ instructed Peter to “Feed My sheep” (John 21:15–17). It is significant that Peter denied the Lord three times (Matt. 26:34; Luke 22:34) and Christ required Peter to confess he loved Him three times. This was done in the sight of the ten other disciples, and I believe it was done to remove all doubt from the others that Peter truly loved Christ and was called to be an apostle. Certainly this was
