However, Rufus was convinced that serious diseases such as cancer, which destroy the body, were caused by a spirit of infirmity that agitated the cells in the human body. He often said that many ministers prayed and asked for a cancer patient to be healed of cancer, but he always rebuked a spirit of cancer that was attacking the cells. He commanded the good cells to be strong in the body. He did, by the way, have results when praying for individuals with cancer. There are spirits called spirits of infirmity that can inflict suffering on a human body. The best biblical example comes from a physician’s observation, a doctor named Luke. In Luke 13 Dr. Luke identified a woman in the synagogue who was bound by “a spirit of infirmity eighteen years” (v. 11). She is called a “daughter of Abraham,” a term used for a woman who believed in the Abrahamic covenant (v. 16). She was “bent over” and could not raise herself up (v. 11). Had she been examined by modern technology, her condition may have been a form of crippling arthritis or spinal disease or some form of a bone disease. However, Jesus identified it as a “spirit of infirmity” and revealed that “Satan has bound” her (v. 16). The Greek word for “infirmity” is asthenia and can be used to identify a weakness of the body or mind.
