Another example is a young child whose father came to Christ for his boy’s deliverance from spirits. The spirits had thrown the lad into water and into fire to destroy him (Mark 9:22). Possessed individuals are often violent, self-destructive, tormented in their minds, and making attempts to harm themselves or others around them. Oppression, however, is a pressure in the mind, body, and spirit, a mental heaviness that is unexplainable. The possessed are controlled out of their spirits , but the oppressed are influenced in their minds . B ELIEVERS C AN H AVE AN I NFIRMITY My father had great results in praying for the sick. His compassion toward the suffering was unmatched in any person I have ever met. He prayed for hours at a time for the healing of those suffering, and during the many years he traveled with me in ministry as a co-evangelist and conference speaker, he saw about sixteen people (that we knew of) healed of cancer. My dad’s mentor as a young minister was his uncle Rufus Dunford, who had performed marvelous miracles through prayer. Before Rufus passed away, I met with him as a young eighteen-year-old, freshly-called-to-the-ministry, wet-behind the-ears evangelist. I was conversing with Rufus at his home in West Virginia and began asking him about his many experiences in prayer and why so many people were healed during his ministry in the West Virginia mountains.
