And this desolation came to pass according to the prophecy of Daniel, which was given four hundred and eight years before; for he declared that the Macedonians would dissolve that worship [for some time].4 The Jewish uprising against their enemies was inspired from their interpretation of a 408-year-old prophecy from a Hebrew prophet! Throughout history, Christians have read the Books of Daniel and Revelation, which reveal events to occur before or during the revealing and return of the Messiah. This includes numerous signs —the rise of a man called the Antichrist, a time identified as the Tribulation , and other predicted events. Since the first century, well-meaning Christians have attempted to interpret these signs and apply them to their generation. Several early fathers taught that Nero was the Antichrist. After ten persecutions against Christianity by ten Roman emperors, the theology was changed, and by the fifth century, some fathers began teaching that the kingdom of God would come to Earth during a one-thousand-year rule of the Roman church. In a.d. 999, many Christians in Europe sold their possessions, donning white robes and making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to stand on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem and await Christ’s return. When there was a no show , the Crusades restored hope that soon faded with the Islamic conquest of Jerusalem. Then in the 1800s a renewed interest in prophetic teaching emerged.
