teachers had all seemed to miss the most important key to biblical prophecy and the return of the Messiah-King. The key was Israel. No major prophecy concerning the return and rule of the Messiah could be fulfilled until Israel was first a nation and Jerusalem was in the hands of the Jews. Numerous predictions by the Hebrew prophets Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and Zechariah reveal this. The picture became clearer in the late 1800s. 1917 and the Jerusalem Miracle In 1886, a Dr. Guinness began calculating various timeframes using biblical numbers from the Book of Daniel and exchanging their normal meaning of prophetic days into prophetic years. He calculated that the timeframes of 1,260 and 2,520 were not days but prophetic years, and he began calculating the times of the Gentiles mentioned in prophecy, which was a clue to the return of the Messiah. His calculations indicated the times of the Gentiles began with Muhammad in a.d. 622 and would conclude in or around 1917. He predicted that 1917 would be the “most important and momentous of all the cycle of years.”5 These predictions were written and made known throughout the Christian community in the late 1800s. It was at the conclusion of World War I in 1917 that a Christian British general, Edmund “the Bull” Allenby, took Jerusalem, ending thirteen centuries of Islamic rule, including four hundred years of Turkish occupation (1517–1917).
