Babylonians enslaved the Jews, until Persian invaders shut off the water, dug under the city, and overthrew the Babylonians in one night. Two leaders, Darius, a Mede, and Cyrus, a Persian, now ruled from the Babylonian throne. Jewish history reveals that after the Persian invasion, the Hebrew prophet Daniel opened the scroll of the prophet Isaiah and showed Cyrus a 140-year-old prophecy that predicted Cyrus’s name and his preordained God-given assignment. Josephus recorded Cyrus’s reaction when he read his own name in the Hebrew scroll: Thus saith Cyrus the king: Since God Almighty has appointed me to be king of the inhabited earth, I believe He is that God of which the nation of the Israelites worship; for indeed He foretold my name by the prophets and that I should build a house in Jerusalem in the country of Judea.1 This amazing prophecy motivated Cyrus to act it out.
