Named Two Hundred Years Before His Birth Twenty-seven centuries ago in the time of King Hezekiah, the prophet Isaiah predicted that the Babylonian army would invade Judea, march to Jerusalem, destroy the temple, and steal the priceless temple treasures. Later, Jeremiah predicted the Jews would remain captive in Babylon for seventy years before returning to Israel (Jer. 25:11). One hundred forty years before the Babylonians’ arrival, Isaiah predicted a man named Cyrus would rise to power and release the Jews from Babylon, permitting their return to Israel. Isaiah predicted: Who says of Cyrus, “He is My shepherd,

And he shall perform all My pleasure, Saying to Jerusalem, ‘You shall be built,’ And to the temple, ‘Your foundation shall be laid.’” Thus says the LORD to His anointed, To Cyrus, whose right hand I have held—

To subdue nations before him And loose the armor of kings, To open before him the double doors, So that the gates will not be shut.
