Mount, neither from a religious nor a historical standpoint. The mufti is either ignorant of archeology or willfully attempting to brainwash less informed people into believing the Jews never had control of Jerusalem in its past. Not only has evidence of a Jewish presence been unearthed in and around Jerusalem, but on the western section of the wall, a large stone dating to the third century A.D. was discovered with old Hebrew writing, "When you shall see this your bones shall rejoice." A stone fragment with Hebrew writing was discovered in the excavation rubble that said, "To the place of trumpeting." According to archaeologists, it was on the top corner of the wall at the location where the shofar was sounded. This unique discovery was uncovered in ruins that dated back to the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in A.D. 70. T AKEN B UT G IVEN B ACK During the Six-Day War, Israeli troops captured East Jerusalem from the Jordanians. On the third day, at 10 o'clock in the morning, Jewish soldiers heard over their radios, "We have the city; we are at the Western Wall!" General Moshe Dayan had the keys to the Temple Mount and could have handed them to the Israeli government. Instead, for fear of causing a major war in the Islamic world; he gave the keys back to the mufti of Jerusalem.
