The common tests are the everyday events that challenge our faith, patience, and determination to remain faithful to God and His Word. The seasonal tests are those trials and temptations that come in cycles, only to return and repeat over a set period of time. The hour of testing is the one major event or test that Satan determines to use to pull you away from God and your faith in Him. The story of Job is a perfect example of a man who came under an hour of testing. Peter’s hour of testing was an assignment from Satan directed toward taking him out before his future destiny as a leader would emerge. It was Peter who boasted to Christ that he would never deny Him and would follow Christ even unto death (Matt. 26:35). Peter proved his loyalty when he pulled out a sword and sliced off the ear of the high priest’s servant. Christ rescued Peter from being arrested by performing a creative miracle of healing the man’s ear (Luke 22:51). Peter and John then followed behind and gained access to the trial area. Peter was warming by a fire when he was accused of being a disciple of Christ. Fear gripped him, and he denied he even knew Christ (vv. 57–60). We read that on the third denial, “Then he began to curse and swear, ‘I do not know this Man of whom you speak!’” (Mark 14:71). To the English reader, when we read of Peter cursing and swearing, it appears that Peter went on a rampage of profanity. However, in the Greek New Testament we need to understand
