YOU AND YOUR TWIN Two men in the Bible, Jacob and Esau, who came out of the same womb at about the same time are a picture of the struggle between the flesh and the spirit. Both brothers began their struggle against one another before their physical birth, just as your spiritual struggles did not begin once you were saved but before you were ever born again . The enemy tries to kill some prematurely through accidents, sickness, or addictions. After conversion we may struggle to discover why we were born and what our purpose is. You may wrestle over the idea of God’s existence and the tug of war between faith and unbelief. Ministers often refer to Esau, a red-headed hunter, as a man of the flesh . However, much of Jacob’s early life was not an example of a picturesque spiritual leader. Jacob loved security. Esau, his brother, was an outdoorsman and a rugged man, but Jacob hung around the kitchen with his mother. Esau appears to have been a daddy’s son and Jacob a momma’s boy. Jacob also loved himself more than his own brother, as he was willing to manipulate his brother’s weakness in order to steal his birthright and his father’s blessing (Gen. 27:36). Jacob felt no conviction for using deception to get his way. By placing goat’s hair on his arms, he was deceiving his blind father.
