Chapter 16 IT’S NOT THE DEVIL— IT’S YOU!

I GREW UP IN A BEAUTIFUL RURAL COMMUNITY IN SOUTH western Virginia, sitting in a church where my dad was pastor. One of the numerous, humorous memories was the testimony service, when the believers were asked to stand and tell something the Lord had done for them. Many times the words were brief, sweet, and edifying. At other times they could have been the main lines of a Christian comedy routine. One man said, “I always wanted God to make me a sweeter person, but I didn’t know He would be killing me with sugar diabetes.” At times the devil was blamed for busted septic pipes in the yard, a flat tire on the way to buy groceries, a neighbor who had hit the dog with the car, or varied negative circumstances. One lady stood and told how the devil had been riding on her back all day long. As a kid I thought, “What is this? Has the devil become a hitchhiker? Why is she letting him ride and not telling him to get off her back?” To some Christians, many of life’s problems
