Following this advice, two of the most noted men became full blown alcoholics, with one losing his family, his ministry, and his integrity, and the other being exposed by the media. Instead of resting, they burned the candle at both ends and suffered the consequences of very unwise decisions. Second, because the services concluded late at night, most of the ministers would fellowship with other preachers and break bread , either in a motor home, hotel restaurant, or the home of a well-to-do businessperson following the night service. The heat under the tent and long services released the appetite like a hungry beast looking for meat. I was told of one man who always ate a steak at night and another who loved ribs. The bad eating habits caused several noted evangelists to have heart attacks and die prematurely in their thirties and forties. The third sad commentary has to do with why the healing revival only continued for about seven years. As with all sovereign revivals and historical movements of the Spirit, as long as the leaders remain humble and God sets the course, the ship will be blown in the right direction. However, as with most of the previous movements, pride and ego became stumbling blocks that eventually quenched the burning flames of revival and sent the men packing up their tents and hauling them into storage. One noted evangelist advertised the “world’s largest gospel tent,” causing a competing minister to customize his tent two feet longer, making his tent the true world’s largest tent!
