The organizational skills of the Roman soldier’s military units can teach the army of God much-needed lessons on the importance of maintaining unity for strength. In the Roman military eight men made up one unit , while ten units (eighty men) made up one century . It required sixcenturies to make up one cohort , and ten cohorts (forty-eight hundred men) were united as one legion (one legion could consist of up to six thousand men). When a Roman unit of soldiers joined together, they formed an effective and dangerous army. 1 If we compare these military units to the size and strength of the various local churches scattered throughout North America, we see an interesting pattern. The unit churches would be churches with up to eighty members, and these churches exist by the thousands throughout rural communities and in small-town USA. The century churches would be those with above eighty and up to four hundred eighty attendees and are often found in smaller cities across the nation. The cohort level of forty-eight hundred attendees and above are the large megachurches that are usually found in the major cities of the nations. Notice that at times the Roman military would join themselves together in larger groups to form one united, powerful group. The church’s biggest weakness is that too often the body of Christ remains behind the four walls of their sanctuaries, with their own denominational flocks, and sees no
