This attitude of “turn or burn” was not the right spirit from a group of men who had already been informed that Christ came to seek and to save that which was lost (Matt. 18:11). Scripture must be used to preach the gospel, encourage the believer, convict the sinner, and correct error that may arise. However, it is wrong for ministers and denominations to get in a “sword fight,” especially in public, as it only causes the sinners to mock and become more hardened as they watch two Christians duke it out to see who can knock the other one down “for the glory of God.” U SING S CRIPTURE TO APPROVE OF YOUR DISOBEDIENCE Another danger of using the sword of the Spirit in the wrong manner is when Scripture is interpreted in an attempt to justify, by certain verses, a person’s disobedience. Several years ago I turned on a live feed from Washington DC where a group of pro-choice women were promoting abortion rights for women. I was stunned when a Jewish woman stood and said, “Even the Torah is on our side.” I leaned forward in disbelief. What verse would she quote to prove that God is pro-choice? She then said: “God said for people to choose, over and over again in the Torah. So we are pro-choice because even God allows us to choose what we wish.” I could imagine an ignorant American who believed in aborting an infant drooling with pleasure at that moment, not knowing that the woman misrepresented the Torah and used a verse out of context to approve of her actions.
