and causing him difficulty. He would be hit, then stand up only to be hit again. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 4:8–9: “We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.” Paul learned that “in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need” (Phil. 4:11– 12). The key was in this fact: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (v. 13). THE MINISTRY OF A “PROPHA-LIAR” If you are still breathing on this planet, you will at some point be stabbed in the back, be evil spoken of, and have the opportunity to be offended. Different people react differently to offenses. When reading the context of the warning of offense, I observed that just one verse after Christ warned of many being offended, He warned that “many false prophets will rise up and deceive many” (Matt. 24:11). Oddly, He repeats the same warning in verse 24, referring to “false christs and false prophets.” What warning is linked to being offended and false prophets? Let me illustrate something I have personally seen as a pastor’s son growing up in a full gospel church. Most full gospel people believe the Lord can and does at times speak to His people through the Holy Spirit and through the vocal gifts (1 Cor. 12:7–10).
