Prophetics in the local church operate very differently from the free flow motions of the itinerant prophet. The fluidity of the prophetic in general usually has a difficult time molding to the necessary institutions of the church. Of all the reasons for this, the chief one is that the church prophet comes under the pastor, and this restricts the normal authority and latitude he or she enjoys. When it comes to the local church prophet, the assignment is not unlike the one between a contracted, howbeit respected, advisor and his or her assigned organization. If the prophet has not been broken and pruned by God, the arrangement may prove disastrous as the mainly ethereal mantle of the prophet clashes with the nurturing one pastors wear. Potential conflicts notwithstanding, there is much value to the arrangement. For it to work, though, prophets serving in a church must be aware that, for the good of the gospel, they are voluntarily surrendering great portions of their ordinary authority and privileges to fulfill another’s mission and mandate.
