THE SECOND BEAST AND THE FALSE PROPHET

Main verses : Revelation 13:11-15

A. The second beast

1. The first beast is the antichrist rising up out of the sea (Rev. 13:1) 2. The second beast is the false prophet rising up out of the earth (Rev. 13:11) 3. The first beast is on a white horse and later forms an empire (Rev. 6:2) 4. The second beast, with two horns like a lamb, in the middle of the tribulation (Rev. 13:11)

B. Two horns like a lamb

1. The word “lamb” is mentioned in Revelation 27 times and refers to Christ except in 13:11 -15 2. The two horns identify his ability to merge two religions together under his control

3. There are three religions in Jerusalem: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity 4. The Jews will flee, thus the two religions are Islam and apostate Christianity

C. The second beast is believed to be a defective Pope

1. Many Catholics teach the false prophet will be a defective pope 2. This pope would deny that Jesus is the Son of God, which will fit with Islamic teaching 3. He will then set himself up as though he is Christ – through false miracles

D. The second beast will perform counterfeit miracles

1. Islam teaches that Isa (Jesus) will appear at Damascus at the white mosque 2. Isa and the Mahdi will join together and move to Jerusalem to defeat Jews and Christians 3. Islam does not believe Jesus was crucified, nor that He is the Son of God

THE IMAGE OF THE BEAST

A. This image worship is referred to in several places

1. In Matt. 24:15, Jesus warned of an “abominatio n that makes Jerusalem desolate ” 2. In 2 Thess. 2:9, Paul warned of la st day “lying signs and wonders” 3. In Matthew 24:24, this will be the false miracles of satanic origin 4. In Rev. 12:6, the image of the beast will cause the Jews to flee to the wilderness

B. This word “image” here is the Greek word “icon”

1 . There are three Greek words for “image” in the New Testament; this word is eikon (or icon) 2. This image will supernaturally speak and live (we see bleeding and crying images now) 3. Image worship is forbidden in the Scriptures (Exod. 20:4; Lev. 26:1; Deut. 4:23)

C. Men will worship the image
