"Slaying in the Spirit" The expression of people being "slain in the Spirit," is a common one amongst many Charismatic churches. The practice is that people go forward and are either anointed with oil, or someone lays hands on them for prayer. During the prayer they lose consciousness either completely or partially, to the extent that they fall to the floor. The teach· ing is that they "come under the power of the Holy Spirit to such an extent that they become unaware of their surround ings or of their physical body." I consider this a very danger ous practice for the following reasons. First of all, I cannot find any scripture telling us that the Holy Spirit is going to knock us unconscious. I do find scrip tures telling us to control our minds (II Cor. 10:5), to be alert and to be vigilant (I Peter 5:8). If you accept a state of unconsciousness from any source without first testing the spirit, then you have directly opened yourself up to the en trance of demons. Falling into a state of unconsciousness is very common in all occultic rituals and Eastern religions. This practice can be very hazardous especially for those coming out of the occult. Larry (not his real name) is a case in point. Larry is a 29 year old man who has been involved in Satan ism since he was 15 years old. He became a high priest by the age of 21 and has traveled the U.S. "trouble shooting" for The Brotherhood. Recently he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and rejected Satan. His struggle for deliverance was intense as he was indwelt by many powerful demons. However, he persevered and was finally complete ly delivered. Suddenly, two weeks later, the demons were all back in again. I talked with Larry extensively, looking for the door way but we were unable to find it.
