The Curse of Divorce "Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: thou shalt build a house, and thou shalt not dwell therein: thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes thereof.... Thy sons and daughters shall be given to another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day long" (Deuteronomy 28:30-32). It was Moses who permitted divorce under the law. Jesus said, "In the beginning it was not so", but God permitted divorce because "of the hardness of your hearts" (Matthew 19:7-9). Divorce is a curse that robs a father of his family and home, or a mother of her family and home. The divorce rate in America is about 50% and many children are its innocent victims. Since society accepts divorce and remarriage so readily, multiple marriages are common. God's best plan, however, is for a man and wife to remain faithful to one another, and to stay committed for a lifetime. 5. Children Will Become a Heartache "Thou shalt begat sons and daughters, but thou shalt not enjoy them: for they shall go into captivity." (Deuteronomy 28:41) Many youth are in a type of spiritual captivity, bound by drugs, pornography, and alcohol. Some face fines and jail sentences because of their violent acts and rebellion. Parents grieve as they reminisce about times when their young children embraced them with open expressions of love. The warm memories haunt them, as they pray that somehow their children will come to their senses and be restored to God.
