drugs. Depression and mental conditions plague society. While we boast of our intellectualism, mental problems increase. What causes a mother to throw a baby into a dumpster, or a father to beat his child to death? What makes a wife hire a hit man to kill her husband, or a mother hire a man to kill a young cheerleader so her daughter can take her place? It must be a curse of madness. 2. The Curse of Drought "And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron. And the Lord shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed." (Deuteronomy 28:23,24) Drought, causing the devastation of millions of dollars worth of crops, has been in American headlines for the past few years. The words "worst drought in seventy years" should cause us to think. In Scripture, drought signified God's disfavor on the nation because of sin. Because of Ahab's wickedness, God withheld rain for forty-two months, which caused a severe drought throughout Israel (1 Kings 17:1). Only the prayers of Elijah reversed the judgment (1 Kings 18:42-46). 3. The Curse of Disease "The Lord shall make the pestilence cleave unto thee, until he have consumed thee from off the land, whither thou goest to possess it. The Lord shall smite thee with consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning ... The Lord shall smite thee with the botch of Egypt ... Moreover he shall bring all the diseases of Egypt upon thee." (Deuteronomy 28:21-22; 27 and 60) Jesus warned that pestilences would be a sign of His return to earth (Matthew 24:7). The word pestilence in Hebrew can mean the plague that ends in death . AIDS is certainly one disease that fits that description. While medical science has made remarkable strides toward curing disease, new viruses are being discovered faster than the ability of the medical community to respond.
