and, after all, could not bring him to the ground" (Source: Pictorial Encyclopedia of American History , Volume 2, page 96). In the biography of Mary Draper, while being held by the Indians, she recorded that she overheard a conversation between French soldiers and her captors. They said that an Indian chief named Red Hawk personally told them that he shot Washington eleven times without killing him. Finally he ceased firing, and was convinced that the Great Spirit was protecting him. David Barton wrote, "Eighty years after the battle, Washington's gold seal with his initials on it was found on the battleground. It was a belt buckle that had been shot off him in the battle. The relic is in the possession of the family. True to the Indian's prophecy, Washington was never wounded in any battle" (Source: The Bulletproof George Washington , David Barton). Considering the battles and the number of bullets fired at Washington, only the protective hand of God could have kept him alive. Leaders Are Divinely Sent at the Right Time One example of a leader being raised up at the right time is Harry Truman. Years ago, Truman's daughter told this story to a Jewish group in Tulsa, Oklahoma. When her father served in the war, he became close friends with a Jewish man. He and his Jewish friend spent much time in the field together. One day he asked the friend, "What are you planning to do when the war is over?" The man replied, "I will go to New York and get involved in the garment industry." He then questioned Truman, "What are your plans when the war is over?" Truman replied, "I want to get into politics and maybe someday I'll be the president!" When the war ended, the Jewish friend moved to New York and Truman eventually became involved in politics. In 1944, Truman was elected to be Vice President during Franklin Roosevelt's fourth term. Eighty-two days after taking the oath of office President Roosevelt died suddenly in April of 1945, and Truman was sworn in as president. According to the book, The Presidents , " ...when the Trumans moved into the White House, the Democrats weren't too sure they had made such a smart move. They spent the next three years plotting to dump Harry before the 1948 election." Truman predicted, "There's going to be a Democrat in the White House in 1949—and you are looking at him." Truman was right.
