7. P RAY FOR Y OUR F AMILY’S P ROTECTION D AILY

Dad demonstrated the importance of praying for family protection every day. In every prayer that I can remember, toward the conclusion Dad would always pray for the entire family! Daily he called the names of his four children in prayer: Diane, Phillip, Melanie, and Perry. I can still hear him petitioning God by saying, “And, Lord, keep Diane, Perry, Phillip, and Melanie from harm, from danger, and from any disabling accident.” This prayer may have come from an experience he had in 1962, when he hit another car from behind while going fifty-five miles an hour. He wrapped the steering wheel around the steering column, and my mother’s head broke through the windshield, breaking her jaw. I was thrown against the metal dashboard and ended up on the floor in glass and bent metal. We all survived, but from that moment, Dad always prayed a prayer for protection. The results of those prayers have been evident throughout our lifetimes, individually and as a family. We have survived several car accidents and have avoided possible life-threatening tragedies because of prayer. As a young teenager, I drove by myself to major cities such as New York to preach in churches. In those days there were only printed maps and pay phones to make calls.
