column can be traced back to ancient Egypt. We learn, however, that columns represented gods.

In a Short Talk Bulletin, entitled “The Broken Column,” published by the Masonic Service Association for use in the Masonic Lodge, we find that: “In EGYPTIAN MYTHOLOGY, ISIS IS SOMETIMES PICTURED WEEPING OVER THE BROKEN COLUMN which conceals the body of her husband Osiris, while behind her stands Horus or Time pouring ambrosia on her hair.” (See “Winged Symbols” for a picture of Isis weeping over the broken column.) A former Satanist and Mason explains: “Isis was both virgin and mother, so the ‘beautiful virgin’ is Isis weeping. The broken column is the missing member of Osiris [the phallus], the acacia, an allusion to the eternal life preached by the Egyptians as well as the fertility cults’ emphasis on vegetation. The urn is an evocation of the canopic jars used in Egyptian funerals to store the vital organs of mummies. “Finally, we have ‘Time,’ the god Saturn, a later form °f the mysterious and evil god, Set. In astrology, Saturn is called the ‘greater malefic,’ or greater evil.
