Of course, just a few verses later we find “that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works” (Titus 3:8). We also know that many profess “that they know God; but in works they deny Him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate” (Titus 1:16), but good works alone will not get us to heaven. As Paul wrote: “For BY GRACE ARE YE SAVED THROUGH FAITH; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). However, once we are saved, we will want to obey God’s commands and work for Him out of love for God, but our works cannot save us. “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone” (James 2:17). Another winged symbol is the winged disk or winged solar disk. It is a symbol of the sky god and was “originally used for magic.” “This symbol originated in ancient Egypt, where it was the quintessential symbol representing Horus, the sun god. The winged disk was used throughout the centuries to represent the supreme god of other pagan cults and societies. It was the symbol for the baal god during Jezebel’s reign, as well as the god of the Zoroastrian cult, founded by Zoroaster, the Persian religious prophet....” A Dictionary of Symbols further informs us: “Disk An emblem of the sun and also of the heavens. In China, the ‘sacred disk’ is a symbol of celestial perfection, and the disk that actually represents the sky (the jade disk called Pi) has a hole in the centre. The ‘winged disk’ is one of the most widespread of ancient symbols, which is still in use today in signs and emblems; in the profoundest sense, it represents matter in a state of sublimination and transfiguration. The two small serpents which are often to be seen next to the disk are those of the caduceus, alluding to the equipoise of opposing forces. But in a more esoteric sense, the winged disk signifies the disk in movement—in flight; it is therefore correctly used today in emblems created by an age which has learnt how to dominate the air and space.” [Emphasis in the original]
