A 1969 Ankh magazine says this about the Elysium Institute: “The ELYSIUM INSTITUTE is a non-profit organization whose purpose is research and dissemination of information in the behavioral sciences relating to nudity and the ‘body taboo’ neuroses so prevalent in our culture. The Elysium Institute promotes self-acceptance and acceptance of others through a wholesome attitude towards the human body and its functions, both physical and emotional, and including man’s sexuality.” [Emphasis in the original] The “Elysium Credo” states (in part): “We will implement this credo by aiding as many people as possible through sensitivity-awareness and psychotherapy programs, and through the experience of recreational activities in which nudity is enjoyed on a clothing-optional basis.... “Here, people experience benefits of unencumbrance from clothing in an appropriate setting....The casual acceptance of the naked self brings with it emotional freedom unknown to those uninitiated to social nudism. Benefits of freedom from clothing are enormous for children....A minister who recently visited Elysium Field remarked that, without effort on anyone’s part, these children were getting the most wholesome sex education he could imagine.” The SIECUS Circle informs us: “SEECUS itself, in fact, maintains close liaison with the pornography cartel through its connection with Elysium Institute, located in Los Angeles. This hedonistic haven prides itself on the programs of nudism, sensitivity awareness, and group sex activities which it offers to its patrons. SIECUS is listed in the Elysium Institute Directory as pursuing the same objective as, and maintaining an exchange of information with, Elysium, as are also the Sexual Freedom League (of Berkeley); Castalia (Timothy Leary’s “League for Spiritual Discovery”); the Institute for the Study of Non-Violence (whose co-director is Humanist Joan Baez); the Institute for Rational Living (headed by Humanist Albert Ellis); the University of Humanism; and the Underground Press (dedicated to the promotion of drug usage, sex, sensitivity training, and obscenity).
