5 Rousing Leviathan
None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me? (Job 41:10) The Jerusalem translation says, "When roused, he grows ferocious, no one can face him in a fight." To rouse means to awaken or stir up. Job 3:8 talks about rousing Leviathan: "Let those curse it who curse the day, who are skilled to rouse up Leviathan" (The Revised Standard Version). This verse equates those skilled enough to rouse Leviathan with those who are able to curse the day. The New English Bible says, "Cursed be it by those who magic binds even the monster of the deep, who are ready to tame Leviathan himself with spells." If you compare this verse with Job 41:10 ("No one is fool-hardy enough to stir him up... " [Berkeley Version]), it implies that even magicians, with all their charms and spells, would not dare to stir up and rouse Leviathan. Even those skilled in the wisdom of the world—magic, spells, and incantations—would not stir up Leviathan. The Lord then asks the question: "Who then can stand before Me?"
