Your assistance is requested as a non-Nigerian citizen to assist the Nigerian National Petroleum Company and also the Central Bank of Nigeria, in moving these funds out of Nigeria. If the funds can be transferred to your name, in your United States account, then you can forward the funds as directed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company. They would agree to allow you to retain 10% or US $4 million of this amount. However, to be a legitimate transferee of these moneys according to Nigerian law, you must presently be a depositor of at least US $100,000 in a Nigerian bank which is regulated by the central bank of Nigeria. If it will be possible for you to assist us, we would be most grateful. We suggest that you meet with us in person in Lagos, and that during your visit I will introduce you to the representatives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company as well as certain officials of the central bank of Nigeria. Y OURS T RULY B EN A HORE This type of letter was sent as a scam to get a person’s banking information and transfer money from the person’s account without their knowledge. And since the scam originates in another country, there is nothing the person can do to have their money returned or see the scammer brought to justice. So the scams continue, and gullible people lose hundreds of thousands of dollars. If someone e-mails you, text messages you, or calls on your phone posing as your bank, insurance company, the IRS, or anybody else requesting your banking numbers or social security numbers, never give them out! Your bank, insurance company, and the IRS have that information already. Never confirm numbers over the phone to someone you do not personally know, as this is another method of gaining access to your information. These scams work because they feed off two desires: one carnal and one spiritual. The carnal is our greed—to get rich quick, to have it made, to never have to work hard again and to do whatever we want. The second is a true desire to help spread the gospel and reach souls. This is the saddest part of a religious scam, when sincere people who desire to bless the kingdom are taken advantage
