an evil spirit, and as David played the harp, the evil spirit departed from Saul, and he was “refreshed and well” (1 Sam. 16:23). At a later time, the same spirit returned to Saul, and he attempted to kill David with a javelin (1 Sam. 18:10–11). Only when David ministered to Saul through anointed music was the nervous king relieved from his mental oppression. Just as this evil spirit could enter and exit at times, when Pam and I would stay in certain areas, our sleep could be disrupted, I believe, by evil entities that were roaming in the night. This uneasy presence in the atmosphere may be the result of who was previously in the room or who is staying in nearby rooms. The spirits ruling over the region During our extensive evangelistic traveling ministry, there were two major cities in which I could sense a very dark, almost depressing or oppressive spiritual presence. The first was Savannah, Georgia, and the other was Tampa, Florida. My first experience in Savannah was shortly after I was married in the early 1980s. We were staying in the home of the pastor of a large church where I was ministering nightly. Both my wife and I were very restless and unable to get any complete sleep. Our dreams were very troubling and left us tired when we arose. After extended prayer I sensed there was some form of occult spirit in the area. When I told the pastor, he revealed this to the church, as Reverend Lester Sumrall had recently stated that he sensed a very strong occult spirit over the city. The pastor stood before the church and said that it was confirmed that there was a spirit of the occult over the area.
