arrived who may have had their own unclean spirits controlling their lives, and individuals possessed with unclean spirits may be sleeping in a room next door! These individuals are often not Christians and may spend their evening watching pornography, violence, or horror movies on the hotel cable or pay channels. At times, some folks would be in their rooms high on drugs, and you could occasionally hear men through the walls mumbling in a loud tone under the influence of alcohol. The lesser-priced hotel rooms attracted more of these types of individuals. We have actually heard couples fighting behind closed doors or groups of young people partying in their rooms until three in the morning, knowing we had to be up at seven for an early Sunday morning service at the church. There were times I felt like getting up, opening the door, and just yelling, “Praise God,” at the top of my lungs in retaliation to the beer guzzlers who disrupted my sleep all night! The atmosphere in the more family-oriented hotel chains did not permit these types of disruptions, and thus sleep came easier and naturally. After years of pondering why some rooms seemed more restful than others, I realized that when a person sleeps (in a room near me), if that person is under the influence of an unclean spirit, that spirit does not sleep when the person is sleeping, because the spirit world does not require sleep as we humans do (Ps. 121:4). Thus when a person is sleeping, the evil spirit is free to enter and exit the person’s body at will (Matt. 12:43).
