These feelings in the spirit can become strong burdens, which are internal weights or pressures that a person feels around the heart. A burden is often interpreted as a feeling of anxiety or stress, as it can be felt within the body. I have learned by experience that the only way to determine if the burden or weight is a spiritual matter is by spending time in prayer and intercession. Spiritual weights can only be lifted by the hand of the Lord. After intense prayer I often sense the burden being lifted, and this becomes a signal that the Holy Spirit is moving on behalf of those things I am unaware of. 3. He speaks by using others’ wise counsel. The Bible says, “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety” (Prov. 11:14). A counselor is an advisor who gives advice to resolve conflicts, to instruct in business, or to warn about and weigh possible dangers. Solomon, king over Israel, understood that: “For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, and in a multitude of counselors there is safety” (Prov. 24:6). In the Old Testament, kings like King Ahab surrounded himself with yes men and false prophets who were hired for pay and enjoyed dinner at the king’s table. It was difficult for such men to warn the king or rebuke him when he was wrong, as negative words were not accepted and often led to a long month in chains in a dungeon under the palace. (See 2 Chronicles 18.) Often a person on the outside of a situation can see more clearly than those within the organization or situation, because their vision is not blurred by numerous opinions.
