When the chief spirit in the possessed man asked Christ not to send them into the “pit” (abyss), how did these spirits know this would be their final place of confinement? After all, it would be more than sixty years later when the apostle John would actually see and record the obituary of Satan and his angels as they were cast into the abyss (the King James Version says “bottomless pit,” Rev. 20:1). One Old Testament prophet, Isaiah, predicted that Lucifer would be “brought down…to the lowest depths of the Pit” (Isa. 14:15). We know from the temptation of Christ that Satan is familiar with the Bible, as he quoted a passage in Christ’s presence that is found in Psalm 91:10–12. The adversary is also aware that when he is eventually cast out of heaven, he “has a short time” remaining (Rev. 12:12). This information undergirds my point: the familiar spirits are familiar with information from the past and are able to relate it through the voice of a person who opens himself or herself up to being controlled or possessed by these spirits. In what is called the New Age movement, individuals connect to spirits b y channeling them in their bodies. Some claim these are ascended masters from the past whose spirits roam through the cosmos and bring supernatural or divine insight into the cosmic mysteries linked with life. I have read occasional stories of some who claim that ancient Indians have given them insights from the past, and the information revealed later proved accurate through detailed historical research.
