However, the answer is that it is accomplished through a familiar spirit . Those in the world of the occult incorrectly believe that a familiar spirit is actually the spirit of a departed loved one who is bringing information from the next world to those friends and family members living. However, this form of alleged spirit contact is forbidden according to the Scripture (Lev. 19:31; 20:6, 27). In Scripture, the Hebrew word for familiar is owb and is used to describe a hollow sound, such as the sound produced when a person blows into the opening of an old water skin (an animal skin sewed together that held water). It is the same action as when a ventriloquist throws his voice , creating the illusion that the puppet on his lap is speaking. This is the same concept for how a person (called a medium) channels a familiar spirit. As the demonic presence enters the room, the medium, sometimes called a channeler , opens his or her mouth to speak, and instead of it being that person’s normal voice, the pitch changes into a male or female voice.
