T HE I LLUSION B ECOMES THE D ECEPTION While in Israel my personal tour guide Gideon Shor related to me an amazing story that also has many parallels to the power of deception in the illusion. Prior to 1917 the Turks were in control of Palestine, and the British were making inroads to liberate Palestine from four hundred years of Turkish occupation. The Turkish soldiers were often poorly trained and very poorly fed and paid. However, most seemed to have one weakness; they loved to smoke cigarettes. As the British made secret plans to move troops from Egypt to Palestine and eventually take Jerusalem, these plans required them to take the area of Beersheba, which was a leading Arab city in the south. In a strange but effective strategy, the British began rolling cigarettes, mixing them with marijuana and opium. The British flew planes near the border, dropping packages of cigarettes. When the soldiers saw the cigarettes, they immediately began smoking them, noticing they had caused a rather mellow effect on them.
