pressure is the key that unlocks the door of peer-deception. With self-deception you convince yourself that what’s bad is good and what’s good is bad, what’s light is dark and what’s dark is actually light. For example, smoking is an unclean habit, yet people will smoke for years—while reading and ignoring the health warning on the side of every cigarette pack and often knowing someone who died with cancer from smoking. Deception says, “It can happen to others, but will not happen to you.” The same is true for driving under the influence of alcohol. Thousands of accidents occur yearly from drunk drivers; however, self-deception causes a numbed brain signal that says you can drive drunk, never wreck, never get pulled over by the police, and get home safe. Self-deception caused David to get Bathsheba pregnant and to have her husband killed in battle. David married Bathsheba after her husband’s death and thought no one would figure out what happened. Inward deception whispers to two teenagers that they can have sex and never need worry about a sexually transmitted disease. Then there is peer-pressure deception . This is the mass hysteria, party animal gang that places verbal pressure upon a person to act in the same destructive, dangerous manner in which they are acting. Peer pressure places a mental weight and emotional burden upon the one being pressured and often forces a reaction that is out of line with the true will of the subject being forced to participate.
