likeness (Gen. 1:26); the couple was already a part of God and His family! It must be remembered that the root of Satan’s sin was pride, as his “heart was lifted up” (Ezek. 28:17). The prophet Isaiah revealed the five statements Lucifer made in his attempt to rise above God: 1. “I will ascend into heaven” (Isa. 14:13). 2. “I will exalt my throne above the stars of God” (Isa. 14:13). 3. “I will also sit on the mount of the congregation” (Isa. 14:13). 4. “I will ascend above the heights of the clouds” (Isa. 14:14). 5. “I will be like the Most High” (Isa. 14:14). Notice the words “I will.” Not we will or they will (other angels), but I will. This angel was “lifted up” or self-exalted in his beauty (Ezek. 28:17). Have you ever met a person who continually spoke about himself or herself and his or her personal accomplishments, continually asserting, “I . . . I . . . I . . . mine . . . me . . . ”? Discerning people say to themselves, “This person is really stuck on himself.” Satan thought he could do what he could not do, and he failed at attempting to be like God! If I were Satan, I would make people believe they needed no leadership in their lives—no pastor, no teachers, no spiritual
